7 Signs Your Indianapolis Home Is Overdue for Exterior Repainting

Indiana's freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and humidity break down exterior paint faster than most homeowners realize. Here are 7 signs it's time to repaint your home's exterior.

Indiana doesn't go easy on exterior paint. The freeze-thaw cycles of winter, summer humidity, UV exposure, and sudden temperature swings all work together to break down your home's exterior finish faster than most homeowners realize. By the time you notice a problem, the paint has often been failing for a while.

The good news: catching it at the right time means a straightforward repaint. Catching it too late can mean wood rot repairs, moisture damage, and a significantly larger job. Here's how to know which situation you're in.

The 7 Signs It's Time to Repaint Your Home's Exterior

1. Paint is peeling, bubbling, or flaking
This is the clearest signal. Peeling paint means moisture has gotten behind the film — either through failed caulk, inadequate prep on the last paint job, or water infiltration from above. Left alone, this leads to wood rot. The fix is a proper repaint with thorough prep.

2. Visible cracking or checking
Fine cracks in your paint film (called "checking" or "alligatoring") mean the paint has aged past its useful life and is no longer flexible enough to expand and contract with temperature changes. This is common on wood siding in older Indianapolis neighborhoods.

3. Fading color
If your home's exterior looks significantly lighter or more washed out than it did when painted, the pigment has broken down from UV exposure. Beyond aesthetics, heavily faded paint is also providing less protection to the underlying surface.

4. Chalking
Run your hand across your siding. If it comes back with a powdery residue, that's chalking — a sign the paint binder has degraded. Some chalking is normal in older paint, but heavy chalking means the film is failing.

5. Visible bare wood or substrate
If you can see wood, OSB, or fiber cement through the existing paint in any spots, those areas are completely unprotected. Moisture penetration at these points can cause real structural damage over time.

6. Staining, mildew, or dark streaking
Indiana's humid summers create ideal conditions for mildew growth on north-facing and shaded exterior surfaces. Staining that won't wash off often indicates the paint film has failed and mildew has embedded in the surface below.

7. It's been more than 7–10 years
Even paint that looks okay on casual inspection may be past its useful life. For most Central Indiana homes, exterior repainting on a 7–10 year cycle is the right maintenance schedule — shorter if the home has significant sun exposure or moisture challenges.

When Is the Best Time to Paint Exterior in Indiana?

Indiana's climate creates a fairly specific painting window. The ideal conditions for exterior painting require consistent temperatures between 50°F and 85°F, with overnight lows staying above 40°F to allow the paint to cure properly.

That puts the primary painting season in Indiana from late spring through early fall — roughly May through October, with the sweet spot in late spring and early fall when temperatures are moderate and humidity is lower than peak summer.

Scheduling in spring or early summer also means you get the protection in place before the harshest UV months and the subsequent fall weather.

What to Expect from a Professional Exterior Repaint

A professional exterior painting job is far more than paint application. The work that happens before the first coat goes on is what determines how long the result lasts.

The prep process includes: pressure washing to remove dirt, mold, and loose paint; scraping and sanding any areas of peeling or failed paint; caulking all gaps, seams, and penetrations; priming bare wood and any areas of significant surface prep; and protecting windows, doors, landscaping, and hardscaping.

The painting itself typically involves a high-quality primer where needed followed by two finish coats of a premium exterior paint. Product selection matters — we use Sherwin-Williams and similar premium exterior coatings that are formulated to handle Indiana's climate.

Serving McCordsville and the Entire Indianapolis Metro

Hoosier Built Painting provides exterior repainting services throughout the greater Indianapolis area, including McCordsville, Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, Brownsburg, Avon, Greenwood, Indianapolis, and surrounding communities.
